We have had several people inquiring if they can keep their Generation 1 soybeans for replanting since the patent has expired. After checking into the particulars of the situation, I have found out that, “NO”, farmers still cannot keep, clean, and replant their Generation 1 soybeans. Though Monsanto no longer has a stake in these beans, the individual companies still retain licensing for the varieties, which prohibits the farmer from keeping them for seed.

You are no longer required to have a Monsanto technology number to plant Roundup Ready 1 soybeans.
